Information

Although sometimes called the white lion, it is not an albino and not a separate species. It is a rare light-colored variation found within the South African lion population, caused by a recessive genetic mutation.

Among the big cats, lions are unique because they hunt in groups. The pride is usually led by males, but most of the hunting is done by the females. During cooperative hunts, lionesses communicate with subtle signals, using ear movements and the tuft at the end of their tails.

Throughout history, lions have symbolized strength and power, which is why they appear in many cultural symbols and coats of arms. The lion became associated with England in the 12th century, when it appeared in the family coat of arms of the wife of King Henry I. Later, through the marriage of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, the emblem evolved into three lions. From 1189 onward, Richard the Lionheart used the now famous coat of arms with three golden lions on a red background, which later became a lasting national symbol.

Lions also appear in Hungarian heraldry. Several noble families used them in their coats of arms, and perhaps the most well-known example is the coat of arms of Budapest, where two golden lions support the shield.
