Informations

The snow leopard lives among the world’s highest mountains, usually at elevations between 2,000 and 5,000 meters above sea level. It is one of the most rarely seen members of the cat family. Thanks to its powerful legs, it is capable of extraordinary leaps, jumping up to 15 meters in distance or about 6 meters in height. Its large, soft, and furry paws help it land silently.

Its pale, spotted, thick fur provides excellent camouflage among snowy rocks and protects it from the extreme cold. The winter coat is not only long but also double-layered. Beneath the outer fur lies a dense, wool-like undercoat that keeps the animal warm. Its favorite prey includes mountain goats and wild sheep.

During the breeding season, the pair may hunt together: one animal drives the prey toward a valley while the other waits in ambush, and then they attack together. With the arrival of winter, snow leopards often follow their prey to lower elevations, moving into dense forests and rhododendron thickets. There they may hunt pheasants, deer, and wild boar as well.

Their long tail helps maintain balance while leaping across rocky terrain, and in cold weather it can also be wrapped around the body like a blanket to protect sensitive parts from the freezing air. Because of its rarity, elusive lifestyle, agility, and strength, the peoples of the Himalayas often call it the “ghost of the mountains” or the “spirit leopard.” It is a national symbol of Tatarstan and Kazakhstan and is also an emblem of mountaineers.
