Our zebra foal has been named Zelma!
Following last year’s foal, Etosha, we also organized a naming contest this year to find the perfect name for our newborn zebra foal. Although it would have been an obvious choice to name her Zelma right away—since she was born on Zelma’s name day—we were still curious to see what our visitors would suggest. It seems we think alike, as Zelma won by a landslide among the hundreds of submitted names.
Of course, many people sent in funny or less serious names as well, and some were not even deterred by the fact that the foal is a mare, meaning we were looking for female names. Still, we are happy that many participants took the contest seriously, and alongside Zelma, many creative and charming names were also submitted.
As you can see, Zelma is really enjoying being outside in the large Savannah enclosure, which the zebras share with the giraffes.
She regularly shows her playful nature—though for now still staying close to her mother—so it is definitely worth paying us a visit. Soon, we can also look forward to more newborns, as the goats have already filled their enclosure, and we are still expecting baby alpacas, Mesopotamian fallow deer calves, and mouflon lambs.
