A widespread species found across much of the Northern Hemisphere, common in Europe, Asia, and North America. It lives in a variety of habitats, including lakes, rivers, canals, and even urban park waters. Highly adaptable, it feeds on a wide range of plant and animal matter.

According to the IUCN Red List, its status is LC (Least Concern).
