Bolivian squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis)

Habitat: Forests and wetlands of South America
Diet: Omnivorous

Bolivian squirrel monkeys live mainly in the forest canopy, but they sometimes descend to the ground while searching for food. They feed on insects and fruits, but also consume eggs, leaves, and small vertebrates.

They live in large social groups of 40–50 individuals. Males establish dominance through intense competition. These monkeys are known for their playful behavior, which they retain even in adulthood.

A characteristic behavior of several South American monkey species, including squirrel monkeys, is scent-marking with urine. They urinate on their hands and spread it onto their feet and sometimes even their tail. As they move, this scent remains along their path and helps communicate with other group members. While foraging, individuals spread out over different areas but stay connected through these scent cues.

Newborns are carried on their mother’s back from the very first moments of life, though other females may also help with carrying. The young become independent after about 5–10 months.
