Cameroon dwarf sheep (Ovis aries)

The Cameroon dwarf sheep is a small, hardy breed of domestic sheep from West Africa. In its region of origin, it was kept for meat and milk. Today, its small size and playful nature also make it popular with people who keep sheep for pleasure. Unlike most sheep breeds, it has a short, dense hair coat rather than wool. It grows an undercoat in winter and sheds it naturally in spring, so it usually does not need shearing. Rams can be recognised by their curved horns and the mane around their necks. The breed comes in several colours; the most common is chestnut brown, with black markings on the belly, chin and inner legs.

Cameroon dwarf sheep live in flocks. They communicate through calls, body posture, movement and scent. Rams can be gentle, too: they often approach their keepers with curiosity and seek their company. Sheep feel safer near other members of their flock, so they should not be kept alone.

Many people keep them for grazing rather than as farm animals raised for production. By eating grass and other herbaceous plants, they can help maintain grassy areas, although they cannot take care of an entire garden. Young trees and shrubs should be fenced off, as the sheep also enjoy eating their leaves and tender shoots.
