West African Lungfish (Protopterus annectens)

Family: Protopteridae

A freshwater lungfish native to West and Central Africa. It lives in slow-moving waters and has the remarkable ability to breathe air. During dry periods, it burrows into drying mud and can survive in a dormant state for months. Its body structure and lifestyle resemble those of early fish ancestors of amphibians.
