What can an old playground structure become? At our zoo… a climbing frame for lemurs!

Our ring-tailed lemurs have a new favourite activity: an old piece of playground equipment has been given a new lease of life in their enclosure. And, of course, there is a good reason for it.

Environmental enrichment is essential for our animals’ wellbeing. It means providing them with a varied and stimulating environment that encourages their natural behaviour. The new climbing frame invites our lemurs to explore, climb, play and stay active, helping to keep boredom at bay.

This specially “lemurised” climbing frame is also a reminder that, with a little creativity, many objects can be repurposed and given an entirely new function. Reuse and recycling can benefit not only us, but animals too.

When furnishing our enclosures, we always aim to use safe, natural or natural-looking materials that support the animals’ wellbeing while also showing our visitors the importance of creative and responsible thinking.

Next time you visit us, be sure to look out for the lemurs enjoying their new climbing frame!
